I mentioned last week in my music room post that I had restyled the cabinet my husband made.
When Luis originally started the cabinet, I had intended to use china and silver, but when he got it finished, I had already decided to use vintage family treasures for a more unique look.
And I have truly enjoyed that look as I could see and enjoy these things every day.
Of course, change is inevitable, and I decided I really did want to see some of my china and silver in here, so I took down the pink shelf paper, rolling it up to use again, then put up a more neutral stick-on wall paper. I would have preferred a white damask wallpaper or wrapping paper, but I couldn’t find any around here and was in a hurry to get it done.
I wanted to showcase our wedding pattern, Minton “Avignon” bone china, which was passed down from a relative then given to me by my mother. We used it at our wedding, so it’s very special to me.
I think china in a cupboard can be boring, though, so I tried to make it kind of symmetrical, but not so much so that it was uninteresting.
I used a few of my crystal and silver pieces here and there to break up all the white. I also like to use plate hangers to hang larger plates on the back panel of the cabinet because it frees up space and is more versatile than using a plate stand or the groove on the shelf.
Once I finished, I felt it still needed a little texture and color, so I added the hydrangeas.
I really am loving this change — not because the other way was bad, but because your eye gets tired of looking at the same thing all the time. I remember my grandmother saying she would take some of my dad’s toys and put them away. After a while, she would get them out and having forgotten them, he would be excited about something “new.” It’s the same with decor, isn’t it?
Changing things around can really give you the fresh look you want — and it’s free:-)
