Valentine French Toast and a blog hop

I really don’t do any decorating for Valentine’s Day, so I had a hard time coming up with something to do to celebrate the holiday. Then I started to think back to my childhood and to those construction paper pouches we made and decorated at school, which were always filled with valentines from classmates. I think that sweet, child-like spirit is what really epitomizes Valentine’s Day for me, so I decided I would do something for my three children. Instead of a paper pouch filled with cards, I made heart-shaped french toast, and I’m sure they will appreciate that a lot more! And since this was a trial run, hubby got to eat this batch:-)

It should be obvious I am in no way a food blogger, so this is definitely something anyone can do:-) I love to make french toast and make it quite often for the kids — usually with whatever bread I have left over, or get in the day-old section at the grocery store.

I started with a heart-shaped cookie cutter. I love this one because it uses a whole slice of bread with very little waste.

I only used 5 slices of bread, so I beat up 3 eggs with about 1/2 cup of milk.

I dipped the bread into the mixture then browned it on a heated 325˚, buttered, griddle about 5 minutes on each side.

Because I don’t add anything sweet, we also have the option of “french toast grilled cheese,” which is nothing more than adding cheese between two slices of the toast prior to removing from the griddle so it melts. I sometimes add turkey or ham.

I served the french toast with my mom’s homemade strawberry jam, maple syrup, powdered sugar and an assortment of strawberries and blueberries.

This is so easy and a great way to start Valentine’s Day with the family:-)
