Fall outside the box

I am definitely taking an outside the box approach to Autumn this year. And I mean that literally if you know my “box” story. In any case, I wanted to change things up and go opposite of all the trends and do what speaks to my heart. What’s new? I knew I wanted color and lots of it, but not typical fall colors. I started by making this rustic centerpiece for my dining table.

We have plenty of horse shoes and plenty of old wood, so I snatched this old gray 2 x 6 off my dad’s outside work table, scrubbed it down and attached two horseshoes on each end with black dry wall screws.

That was it.

I had a vision of multi-color/size candles so I dug through my stash and found everything but hot pink. So no one anywhere around *these parts* had hot pink candles, but I managed to find a large 3-wick candle at Walmart on clearance, as well as two smaller ones in glass that work just fine.

I played around with the arrangement for a while. It takes forever to make something look random and unplanned. Who knew?

In any case, I love it with all the candles and it brings out all the color in the Indian sari turned silk table runner. Plus, the options are endless for accessorizing this little board. I can put pots of flowers, candlesticks, tea cups, etc., and give it a whole new look.

Fall is very colorful here, and I really wanted to capture the outside to bring inside. My mom still has gorgeous multi-color zinnas blooming and my hot pink impatiens are the prettiest they’ve been. Maybe that’s because of the 5″ of rain we’ve had.

And color is not the only thing I am embracing for fall. I also brought out some of my collection of Native American art to spread around. There is something about fall here that brings me closer to my roots. Maybe it’s my mother’s Cherokee heritage, or the many trips we have made over the years to Cherokee to enjoy the festivals, fairs and fry bread. Or maybe it’s because we live in these amazing mountains, and I am reminded of my ancestors, whose voices still echo in the rustling leaves and brisk autumn winds, telling us to be thankful for the blessing of this beautiful land.

And for that, I am truly thankful.

I always love your decor pieces, but the horseshoe/board centerpiece takes the cake. I've always got several laying around (perks of keeping 6 horses in horseshoes!) so I think I'm going to need to make something similar for my home!
