Cozy winter bedroom

I might be in the minority, but I love when the days get shorter, and we get back on standard time. I love those cozy nights, dinner around the table by candlelight, and the clear, starry skies that only appear in winter.

When it starts to get colder, I like to bring out the down comforters, quilts and flannel sheets for each bedroom as well. Our house is heated by a heat pump, which is just not the warmest kind of heating, and I like everyone to be warm and snug without turning up the heat.

For the master bedroom, I brought out my down comforter but didn’t really like the white duvet cover, so after looking for something affordable, decided on this velvet duvet cover and pillow shams. It is the Tribeca Living Venice Velvet Duvet Cover Set, and it’s available at several different online sellers. It was around $53 with free shipping, so I feel like I got a great bargain as I will use it for years to come.

I wanted a dark color to ground this room, and it’s cozy/comfy as well. The color is not bright red, and it’s not burgundy either, but somewhere in between. It’s a nice, deep, rich red.

I liked that it coordinated so nicely with my grandmother’s antique Harden settle from the old house as well.

This room just takes on an extra layer of cozy in the cold weather, and I’m still loving the dark gray paint.

The room is filled with antiques and inherited treasures that each tell a story.

From my great aunt’s hand-sewn and embroidered nightgown and granddaddy’s little gown from the early 1900s, to the doors I reclaimed and restored from the old house, my grandmother’s trunk and the antique iron bed I found here and restored.

I love giving old things new life and keeping them going for another generation. I always prefer old anything to new, cheaply-made copies that have to travel across the ocean then end up in a landfill next season when the trend has passed.

I brought the 1900s Perfection Kerosene heater by Standard Oil in here from the living room because I liked the way it looks against the black mantel. This particular model dates somewhere between 1906 and 1920 and has been on the property since then. It was originally blue enamel, but I broke with my usual “never, ever paint anything old” tradition and gave it a coat of black paint with gold trim. I love it this way, and after 100 years, a new coat of paint didn’t hurt it. This one is in like-new condition with an unused wick, but I’m not planning to light it up. I have a battery-powered candle inside for ambience.

Original antique art painted by my late uncle is a treasure along with my daddy’s first cowboy boots and an antique oil lamp. The bowl and pitcher set belonged to my mother.

Candlelight and a warm, cozy bed make the winter nights ahead seem not so dreary, and in fact, fall and winter are the seasons I look forward to all year. And quite honestly, I’m beyond thankful to have a warm, cozy house to live in. I don’t take any of it for granted.

I really love this room so much, and I’m so proud of the things in here I have restored, reclaimed, made myself (curtains, pillows, etc.), and repurposed. It’s really possible to have a beautiful room without spending a lot of money. It just takes being creative and doing a little work to make it happen.

But in the end, all that effort is more than worth it😊

Oh- How pretty. My own home is pretty neutral but when I see the color here it makes me want to take the plunge and go for some color! It is rich looking and beautiful. I got sidetracked by your mom's pie and grandma's pie crust recipes, too, and copied them over.
    Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Warm and cozy are perfect words to describe your beautiful bedroom. From every vantage point there is something on which the eye can rest and enjoy just being. I do love the doors and the affect they have on the room. And the new duet cover and pillows are the perfect elegant and warm touch. Love the color!

Well…..I have always loved your home and the bright rich colors, but this time you outdid yourself!! I have a red sueded fabric comforter and shams….I think I will use them over an off white matelassé, and copy the rest of your room. I, too, am of the make it, use it up mentality, so here I go!! Thank you for the ideas! I also love the shorter days and cozy evenings!
    Blessings,

I've been following your posts for years. Didn't that room used to be white? I LOVE the new color. Can't tell if it is green or gray. But it's gorgeous!!
