What makes a kitchen the heart of a home

Y’all knew I had to bring some color back to this kitchen, didn’t you?

I get really bored and need to add color to spice things up, so I brought back my Indian sari curtains and sink skirt, the red velvet table runner and some red towels😊

I love how fabric can really change a space without much effort. It helps that I’ve been sewing my entire life, but honestly these are things anyone can do with basic skills. And those little things really make a difference in the look and feel of a room.

I shot these photos last week when I had my supper (that’s what we call it here) in the crock pot and was getting ready for my family to get home from school and work. The sunlight was just pouring into the space, and the whole scene just warmed my heart.

It really made me think about what’s important in a home and what I’m thankful for in mine.

It’s really not about the size of your kitchen, or how fancy your appliances are or any of that. It’s really about what you do with what you have. And this is what I have.

I’m thankful for this kitchen, and it is certainly full of many things I love and treasure.

We made the countertops out of antique wormy chestnut, and I installed the wormy chestnut beadboard from my great grandfather’s house last summer.

I made the table about 16 years or so ago also out of antique wormy chestnut from the property and had a local craftsmen make the iron base I designed based on antique fence patterns.

The screen door is from my great grandfather’s house here, and I restored and reclaimed the millwork from another little cottage on the property.

I made the curtains and sink skirt from a vintage Indian sari I bought from eBay last spring.

I’m thankful for creativity to make and repurpose things.

I’m thankful for a home that we feel safe in.

This is definitely the heart of our home.

But the things, as much as I love them, are not what’s important.

Many homework projects have been tackled at this table.

Many family conversations, a whole lot of laughs, tears, and great meals have been had at this table.

And the reality is — my family sitting around the table every night is what truly gives it life and makes this home❤️❤️❤️

And for that I could not be more thankful❤️

I love your kitchen and all the love that went into it! Another thing I like about your blog is that there are no sponsors, and I get to read the whole text! When I read other blogs, there are so many endorsements etc that my old computer gets stuck!!!

I love that you have your own style of decorating and it is lovely! I enjoy following many blogs/vlogs and most are either Farmhouse neutral or Country French, it's good to have a refreshing peek into your home. I love the curtains at your window and sink, the fabric is so unique. Thank you, for allowing me to see your welcoming and beautiful cozy home.

Thank you so much Sharon! I definitely follow the beat of my own drummer and try to stay away from anything too trendy. I'm a rebel I guess:-)

I LOVE your kitchen and saw your Instagram post about small kitchens. You can do a lot in a small kitchen just as your mom and you have done. My husband's grandma had a dinky kitchen and served huge Thanksgiving dinners to at least 30 people for many years. I have often wondered how you felt about having a small kitchen and how you managed with it. Keep the beautiful and encouraging posts coming!

Thanks so much! Actually, my kitchen is not small at all (16' x 24' total) which is why we were able to take out the island and replace it with a table. So I've never had any trouble managing in it. I have a lot of cabinetry and a pantry as well. While I did lose counter space when we removed the island, I have not missed it. I don't have upgraded appliances, though, and just a regular oven but have no issues cooking a Thanksgiving size meal:-)
