Christmas Dining

Things are a little more subdued in my dining area as opposed to the merry and bright kitchen I showed you yesterday:-)

The decor is really not all that different from last year with the exception of color.

Between the browns of the wood and the grey walls, this area can be a bit too neutral for me, so I love the opportunity to add color, and red plaid was my choice this Christmas. Because red plaid was really scarce around here, I ended up ordering a large tablecloth from ebay and cutting it up into runners and ribbons.

I brought these antlers back from the bedroom when the *new* old ones my dad mounted for me were smaller than these. They ended up in the bedroom over the mantel there, and these just worked better here.
My husband and children made snowflakes from white paper several years ago and I love hanging them on this window from the old house. The "putz" style version I made of my dad's house has landed in this spot on the buffet for the last three years.

I added a little burlap to the ribbons on the candle chandys.

My vintage "Currier and Ives" dinnerware has become a winter tradition here too.

Vintage napkins are rolled up in a bamboo napkin ring tied with red ribbon and accented with juniper and a peppermint stick. Not one of my children has tried to eat them either:-)

I tried to "pretty up" a relatively plain table setting with vintage silverplate flatware, Fostoria "Heritage" glassware, silverplate chargers and Battenburg lace placemats.

I used the yule log my grandfather made in the bedroom, and have this one my dad made here. I love the simplicity of it and the memories it brings back.
Pinecones, juniper and nandina berries add some natural color and texture.

A plate rack holds "Currier and Ives" platters on the old door.

A little hemlock seedling is dressed simply in a few vintage Shiny Brite ornaments.

Thanks for stopping by:-) I sure wish we could all gather around the table with some yummy food and a pot of Wassail for a real visit!
I'll be back tomorrow with the living area and my quirky little Balsam tree from the back yard.

I'll be joining:

  1. I look forward to every installment of your décor that just takes me back in time. Very pretty Anita.

  2. So glad to finally see your lovely home for Christmas!! I also like to use fabric for runners and ribbons. It is so much more cost affective than buying ribbon!! They look wonderful!! Merry Christmas to you and your family, I know you enjoy all the traditions of your family!!! I love your blog!!!

  3. I adore all the touches of plaid! It makes the room so cozy and warm!

My wish is that your holiday season is filled with peace, love and joy.

May you and yours be blessed with health and happiness in the new year.

  4. I love your room! Especially the snowflakes in the window, may I borrow this idea? Thank you for sharing, it was a pleasure to drop by! Have a greatfull day! XxDazee

  5. LOVE the blue dishes paired with the red plaid and love that pretty centerpiece you created Anita! Your tree looks beautiful too!

  6. Beautiful, Anita! You know I'm loving all of the plaid! I just wish I could see all of this in person. I am sure pictures just never do it justice! You have such a talent for using your family heirlooms and making everything so special!

  7. Love your little tree in the urn...so cute! The whole room looks wonderful and so festive.

  8. Wassial is my favorite, now that you mentioned it I'm going to have to make a big batch in the crock-pot!
I also adore the way you trimmed your light fixtures with the burlap & the plaid ribbon, it just makes everything so festive!

    xoxo, SS
