Christmas at Balsam Mountain Preserve

Here we are the day before Christmas Eve, and I'm just now sharing the work I did at Balsam Mountain Preserve!

BMP is such a beautiful place here in the mountains, so I always keep things pretty simple and very natural to reflect the mountain landscape. We had a dusting of snow the day I shot these photos for just a bit of Christmas magic!

A centerpiece for mother plus 8 more Christmas centerpieces using a long board

I love to create a pretty centerpiece for Christmas, and the last few years I've used a long board as the base, so I thought I'd share one I created for my mother then eight more of those ideas with you all in one post.

Victorian farmhouse Christmas

I love Christmas. I love everything about it from the most important aspect - celebrating the birth of Christ, right on down to the cultural traditions and customs, from trimming the tree and hanging stockings by the fire to singing Christmas carols and the first taste of my mother's fruitcake. My memories of Christmas are absolute magic and the stuff dreams are made of, not because we had lots of gifts, but because of the wonderful family times, church services, and brown paper bags filled with an orange, an apple and a few candy canes.

The older I get, the more I want to keep that old-fashioned magic alive so I went back in time for a late Victorian-style Christmas.

Cozy winter bedroom

I might be in the minority, but I love when the days get shorter, and we get back on standard time. I love those cozy nights, dinner around the table by candlelight, and the clear, starry skies that only appear in winter.

When it starts to get colder, I like to bring out the down comforters, quilts and flannel sheets for each bedroom as well. Our house is heated by a heat pump, which is just not the warmest kind of heating, and I like everyone to be warm and snug without turning up the heat.

Fall dining and music room

It seemed like fall would never arrive here in the N.C. mountains, but finally we have some cool weather, frost and changing leaves!! Give me all the fall y'all😊

I love for the inside of my home to be warm and welcoming for my family and to also reflect the beauty outside, so I always add some candles, texture and fall foliage to bring that autumn feeling in.

The Duncan Phyfe

If you follow me on facebook, or at whispering.pines.homestead on instagram, then you'll know all about my sofa saga. Once I figured out the rescue couch needed to go to my mother's in order to have space for my mantel, I knew I needed a replacement. I wanted an antique, preferably Duncan Phyfe, or something similar -- and in the $200 range. Ha. Right? I had found on facebook marketplace an amazing red velvet Empire Victorian sofa near Clemson, S.C., but the owner waited for days to return my emails, texts and messages and in the meantime, sold it days after I contacted her.

But that was all meant to be.

Because I found this one💝

DIY Victorian mantel

I have been wanting another mantel for my living room for a while, but couldn't figure out where to put one. Well, not one to give up, and after a lot of thought, I did some furniture reshuffling with my mom, a facebook marketplace purchase, and finally got the space I wanted for a mantel.

But I didn't have a mantel! Well, again not to be deterred by a silly limitation like that, I went to the little house and pulled out some wood from the old house and voila, Victorian mantel.

Mountain farmhouse fall tour

It's my favorite season. It always has been. Growing up here in the mountains of western North Carolina, fall was always this magical time where vivid Carolina blue skies met walls of saturated colors so vibrant, the mountains seemed to be on fire. Crisp mornings, roadside fruit stands, mountain hikes, barbeque and bluegrass all came together to make for the most memorable times a child could have.

Fall also brings out everything Appalachian in me. Warm, cozy, inviting homes with the aroma of fresh-baked apple pie and my mother's homemade flaky crust take me back to a simpler time when the self-sufficient, hard-working people in these mountains grew their own food, made their own clothes and used what they had letting nothing go to waste. And many still do, including my parents.

That sums up what fall is all about for me, and it's what I try to reflect in my home.

I'm excited to share some of my fall home as part of Marty's 2019 Fall Home Tours along with 29 other talented and creative ladies. You will find many different styles, color palettes, and design ideas  throughout the week -- all beautiful and equally inspiring. So let's get started!

First, I want to welcome those of you coming over from Tammy's beautiful home at Pink Peppermint Design

The box is back!!

If there is one thing I'm known for, I'd say it's the long box centerpiece. About eight years ago, my husband made a long box for me out of some of my grandfather's scrap wood and a pallet my dad brought home. It was super popular, and still to this day posts with that box are my most popular pins and also generate most of my blog traffic. In fact, people steal my photos to sell their boxes, etc. Seriously. We started making them to sell in my etsy shop, and eventually I sold that first one when a buyer requested that exact size. Anyway, at that point, they were everywhere so I tired of using it. But never fear, because the box is back😉

The beadboard

This photo tells a story that means the world to me, and I hope the words I have chosen can express that.

Silver summer buffet

Well hello everyone! We are experiencing the heat of August here in the NC mountains, and I cannot wait for that to end. Inside,  though, it's cool, and I'm always changing things around here and there.

I always enjoy different vignettes on my buffet, because I have lots of things to rotate, and I get tired of the same thing, so I decided to take away the brass and add some old silver.

Pink summer bedroom

It was about seven years ago when I started to use that peachy/pink shade after I found paint drips that color on the backs of some boards from the old house. It was a favorite of my grandmother's.

There were very few using that shade then, but a couple years ago the "blush" trend came out in full force.

You're welcome😉

In any case, I wanted to add some of that to my reds and grays, so the addition of a pink chenille bedspread my mother let me borrow was the perfect opportunity to do so.

Reclaiming vintage trim

If you have followed here very long at all, you'll know exactly how passionate I am about saving every piece of my heritage I can. My mantra has been, "reclaiming the past -- one board at a time," and that has been literally what I've been doing. I love the challenge of restoring something, and the satisfaction of saving something that would have been thrown away.

I wanted to use the fluted door trim in the little house for a while and finally got around to doing it.

Adding a light over the table...

If you were here last week, or follow on Instagram and facebook, you will know that we took out the island in the kitchen, moved the dining table there, added two walls to make a home office/studio and reoriented the living room.😀 Yes, all that.
So I needed to move the current fixture, which was not centered anyway, to where the center of the room is, and centered on the table. Not, I need to add, centered on the kitchen sink/window.

Happy New Year -- ok I'm a bit late but it's still a new year and a great time for a fresh start. First, I LOVE winter, the cold, dark nights, and the coziness our home has this time of year. You won't see me rushing ahead to spring.
