Fall Living Room – Rustic Cabin-inspired

Hi everyone! I’m so excited my favorite season is here! I love this time of year, and it just makes me happy – the angle of the sun, the crisp air, blue skies, crunchy leaves, signs of the harvest, you name it – I love it🍁

I’m sharing my living room and the non-traditional approach I took to welcoming the season. I really wanted to recreate a look I had back in 2021, but, it just didn’t feel right so I moved some things around and took a different approach.

I had moved great grandmother’s chaise here under the windows, then decided to use the channel back chairs, until my boys let me know they preferred having the channel back chairs in the kitchen. We gather in the kitchen a lot🙂

I’m always perusing Marketplace for fun and saw these chairs listed for $15 each. When I contacted the seller about the condition, she said I could have both for $15. They were dirty, but it was all surface dust and dirt – no stains, rips, or bad smells. I used to blower first then the vacuum, and everything came off. I then sprayed upholstery cleaner and vacuumed that off then left them in the sun. I thought they were perfect for this area next to great granddaddy’s drop leaf table.

I ended up using some of my Native art collection and just adding some cozy textiles in fall colors to really give the room a warm, welcoming fall feel.

All my baskets are Cherokee except for the small Nisqually one I got in Washington.

I bought three of these plates on a trip to Bolivia. The small bowl was a thrift find years ago, and the large vase is form Mexico.

I added some kilim and velvet pillows I’ve had for years.

I used an old stair tread from the house here to mount some of the arrowheads my maternal grandfather gave me years ago. They hang over a print my paternal grandfather framed in 1936.

My mother’s vintage 1969 Pieri lamp was perfect with these colors and textures.

My mother gave me a whole series of postcards of Native Americans many years ago, so I framed one as well as another photo I had.

For the mantel, I asked my husband to go through the amazing collection of his photography and found this beautiful photo he shot at Lake Emory in Franklin, N.C., the morning he found his father in Puerto Rico had had a heart attack. It’s such a special photo, and I love the meaning behind it. I also love how the reflection on the water is similar to the reflection of the teepees in the other photo. The dark, moody look is perfect for this season.

Mexican, Navajo and Cherokee pottery along with granddaddy’s old books keep the mantel looking rustic and vintage.

There is not a pumpkin in sight, nor any fall leaves but I really think this room has all the cozy, fall vibes and is certainly warm and welcoming for this season. I always encourage people to do their own thing and let the items they use tell their story, and ours certainly do in here. Don’t be afraid to try something different – you might just love it❤️

There is a video showing some behind the scenes footage,  so be sure you don’t miss that!

The tones of colors and the rich textures all say “autumnal warmth” without using a single made-in-China pumpkin, scare crow, etc. Great!

Who needs pumpkins and leaves when a room looks this great! You are very talented using old family treasures to decorate. I didn’t understand the husband’s photo picture? Did his dad have a heart attack at this site?

I always so enjoy your home videos and blogs. Keeping traditions, family pieces, scrounging for the perfect chairs…accommodating family with what the want (sons’ chairs)…really is all about what a HOME is. Some how, i just smelled sage mixed with a delicious apple tea when looking at your room. Enjoy Fll, your are certainly ready. Sandi
