Winter Cabin-style Kitchen

Hi everyone, and welcome back! Y’all know I love winter, and I always enjoy weather that does not include bugs, heat and humidity – even if it means caring for my chickens in single-digit weather🥶

I always simplify things in the house after Christmas to really take advantage of the beautiful light we have in the house this time of year. In the summer, leaves on the trees make it dark here.

Because we have all the beautiful wormy chestnut wood I restored on the walls, the table I made, and the countertops my husband made, I feel like a cabin-style kind of look suits this room well – plus our mountain, wooded location by a creek is the perfect setting.

I brought out a sink skirt I made last winter and added the red transferware I didn’t use at Christmas for a pop of red.

Y’all know I love old movie and TV set design, so I noticed although the set decorators in old westerns use Blue Willow a lot, the red transferware was used on the set of Bonanza, so I brought mine out.

Mother bought the Johnson Brothers Old Britain Castles soup tureen and platter, and the plates, bowls, cups and saucers are J & G Meakin Romantic England. The Masons Vista pitcher was a gift years ago.

I kept up the lace curtains and cafe curtains I made out of feed sacks from Granddaddy’s store.

I shot these photos in January, so the calendar reflects that, but the year 1959 coordinates with 2026, so I’m enjoying using this one again.

The big change in here was chairs. I know, I have had trouble finding chairs that are comfy, sturdy and work with the table. Since my table is in the kitchen now, I need to use it for cooking and prep space, so I really wanted to find something with shorter backs that would not impede that.

I found a set of six Duncan Phyfe-style chairs on Marketplace for $50, and because I’d had that style chair for many years with this table, I bought these and sold the ladder back chairs, which had serious issues with the damaged rush seats.

I love these especially because they have the lyre – perfect for us as musicians🙂 I restored the finish and recovered the seat bottoms with a vintage Goodwin Weavers “Aztec” pattern blanket.

I love how they turned out and how they look in this room! It’s so easy to turn around from the countertop area and set something on the table now. Also, I have seat covers I’d made for my old chairs like this I can use if I want to change the look.

I’m loving this look in here and just hanging on to these beautiful cozy days before they turn into a lot of outdoor work – and sweat😄🥵

There’s a video on my channel showing the restoration process and some beautiful snowy scenes around the house. Plus, my talented husband is featured playing a beautiful piece he composed and recorded for his father in Puerto Rico❤️

Thanks for stopping by friends!

What you do with the older calendars is so fun! Your [old] new chairs are stunning and the convenience of turning from the kitchen to place things on the table makes so much sence…so smart! Your home is such a blessing, have a Happy Valentine’s Day❣️

Very nice. Like the seat covers! Love the video and lovely music. If my husband had that talent, he’d be required to perform for me every day! God Bless.

Your kitchen looks great with the wood walls. It is all very cozy. I too love Winter, and Autumn…not a fan of the heat and bugs.
I am a lover of The Waltons, and I believe they had red transferware type dishes on the hutch in the kitchen/dining area. Going to see The Waltons Museum is the furthest south I have been. It was March and I was hot! I live in New Hampshire. I always enjoy your posts and videos. God bless you and your family.

Thank you so much Christine! Yes, they had the red transferware in that hutch by the door😊 In fact, I used some photo from the set of that area in my 2024 Christmas kitchen video🙂 If I were building a house, that would be the kitchen I would have😊

Your dining chairs came out so beautiful! Great choice in fabric.

I also pay attention to the sets in old movies and tv shows. They are great inspiration.

yes! I definitely spend more time looking at the set and how the designers have accessorized than anything😊 Thank you Briana!
