My mother’s bread recipe

After posting these yummy photos of my mom’s bread on my facebook page, I had lots of requests to post the recipe.

It is from the Grit newspaper cookbook you can find HERE. She uses it for everything from bread to hamburger buns. Here are her instructions for making the buns:

“This recipe makes 2 nice loaves. I used the same recipe and divided it in half as I normally would for the 2 loaves. Half was put in a loaf pan for bread. The other half, I then divided into 8 pieces and rolled them into a ball. Then: flatten these 8 pieces into 3 and 1/2 inch circles, (appriox) about 1/2 inch thick. Place on a greased cookie sheet leaving space between each for rising. Or: you may cover your cookie sheet with parchment paper, which does not need to be greased. Cover with a nice lint free cloth (no terry cloth as it will stick) I use old flour sacks. They are the greatest. Let double in size. They should look good and puffy after about an hour. Before baking, brush melted butter over each (gently, with a soft hand) and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake about 20 minutes at 350 degrees.”

Now, I believe bread making is an art, and if I followed this recipe to the letter, I would not end up with something more the texture of a rock. I think it takes practice.

But, if you are going to eat bread, knowing that it is freshly made out of pretty simple ingredients with no preservatives makes it worth those extra carbs. Add a little homemade grape jam and real butter, and you have heaven on earth:-)

    All children should experience a few times the great taste of homemade bread. And it makes the house smell wonderful! I printed out the recipe to try!

    There really is nothing better than a loaf of fresh, homemade bread. I make my own sourdough bread and to me, it's worth every step. The aroma of fresh bread baking is wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing your Mom's recipe. I can't wait to try it.

    My Mom made bread and taught me how at a young age. Its an art lost to young people today. It makes your home very welcoming and truly adds to the love you bring to the table. Thank you for sharing this lovely recipe. I will use it for years to come,
