Flowers at Balsam Mountain Preserve

I always enjoy the opportunity to create something for Balsam Mountain Preserve, and during the winter, trying to be creative keeps me on my toes.

After the holidays were over, I wanted something winter but something that did not scream Christmas, so I used my green Mason jars and added different varieties of pine along with faux red berries and pine cones. Since the greenery lasts forever but wanting a weekly change, I simply added red roses and yellow lilies to what I already had.

These really did well for a week, but the roses started to get brown on the edges.

We have a brand new Ingles here, and I've been loving perusing their flower section, so when I saw these begonias in different colors, I thought they would be really pretty on the tables.

I bought clay pots from the craft section at
Walmart, as they do not have holes in the bottom like regular clay pots, and spray painted them metallic gold.

I simply lifted the dirt and all out of the plastic pots and placed them in the clay pots.

They should certainly last longer than a week, and I think are a nice change from a traditional flower arrangement.

I thought about making a long wooden box and putting some together for the mantels if I can get more.

I think these are so pretty and really soften the appearance of all the wood and rock and will be a breath of fresh air here in the middle of winter.

My brain is always working overtime trying to think of creative things to do here that will last at least a week, be small enough to fit on the tables, and brighten things up.  I really love this, and I can use the gold pots again for something else.

  1. What a great idea. It looks fresh and bright and like we are headed towards Spring! Perfect! xo Diana

  2. I LOVE the plants and they will last great and not need a lot of water! Win, win! They look fabulous. I love the pots from Walmart, I am going to go get some!

  3. Maravilhosas imagens. Feliz semana.

  4. The blooms are beautiful. I am so glad to have found your blog. It is so refreshing to see home decor that is not the farm house style. I miss color in decorating and the farm house tradition is just not for me.

    1. Well thank you so much for that!!! I'm looking around at my plans for summer thinking *no one* is doing this much color, so good to know I'm not the only one who loves it:-)

  5. So very beautiful Anita! You always decorate this wonderful place so beautifully!!!
