Hello friends! I’m back with a makeover I did not plan! Well, if you don’t count thinking about trying different things while lying awake at night🙂 Ever since we divided this room to make an office/studio and added the mantel I made, I’ve had a sofa in front of the front windows/french doors, which is my least favorite place to have a sofa. There just wasn’t another spot.

It dawned on me to just take out the mantel and install it in the opposite corner, and I’m so glad I took the chance and tried that! Although I tried to put the sofa on the wall where the mantel was, it just didn’t work, so I tried it on the diagonal, and that worked beautifully. If you’ve been here long, you know I have frequently had a sofa on the diagonal in here. I love how that opens up a room and makes it feel bigger, and that was really the case here. I did move the antique chaise into the bedroom and a couple other pieces to different rooms.

We just love how this looks and feels. I went ahead and brought in more of the colors I’ll be using for Christmas with the greens and reds plus some of my Native art and more rustic things that make the room feel like a cabin in the woods.

We have the most beautiful red oak leaves here now, and I always bring some in every fall to enjoy.

I’ve had the rug for a while, and just folded up the Persian for now. It has really faded but it’s a favorite so it’s not going anywhere. I did sell a couple other rugs I had not been using.

I painted over the stenciling on the armoire because it just felt too busy. I’ve been on the lookout for a wood corner china cabinet with a smaller profile and footprint to use for the TV and all the media, but have not found the right thing in my price range yet. I put the Victrola there in that spot because it seemed like a convenient place to have it since we can play everything from records and cassettes to CDs and use Bluetooth.

I made the curtains last year out of tablecloths. I wanted something plaid and cabin-like but not heavy. I usually put up the dark red chenille drapes but just wanted to enjoy more of the light that comes in with these lighter ones.

I put the two channel back chairs here flanking the mantel, which I love in this corner.

Although the antique Perfection kerosene heater is in working order, I don’t use it for heat and usually just have a candle or, in this case, a flame bulb inside for ambience.

I love just having a small table here between the chairs to set a cup or coffee, etc.

I had to build a frame to install the mantel in the corner, and decided to also build up a base inside for the heater. I have also used our little electric stove radiant heater in this spot.

To get the “cabin-style” feel I wanted, I just used some of my Native art collection, plaids, kilim pillows and wool blankets. I found the Native Chief prints by photographer Edward S. Curtis on Facebook Marketplace $30 for three. I saved Chief Joseph for the bedroom, and used the other two in here: Chief High Hawk above the Victrola and Chief Red Hawk, here above the mantel.

We were pleasantly surprised at how this opened up the room, and I’m so happy to have the sofa out from in front of the windows! I think it will be wonderful for Christmas and the winter season ahead, which you know I love😊
The lesson here is try bold and different things in your home – even if you think they might not work. They just might work, and you’ll have a fresh, new look and feel😊
There’s a new video up with some of the behind-the-scenes and some reveal shots at the end, so be sure to check that out!
Thanks for stopping by!
