Creating a cool summer bedroom retreat

I’m so excited to be joining a super-talented group of bloggers today, thanks to Marty at A Stroll Thru Life, and we are all sharing summer bedrooms. I’ll put links below so you do not miss any of the other tours. I’d like to also welcome everyone coming over from the very talented and creative Cassie Bustamante.

I love to change my decor out seasonally, and the bedroom is no exception. I have always been a fan of white bedding, but during the winter, I had layered dark, warm colors to create a cozy retreat that was inspired by my great grandmother’s antique quilt. It was time to carefully pack that heirloom away for summer and get out some lighter linens.

I started with crisp, white cotton sheets, a chenille bedspread and switched out the velvet duvet cover for the white cotton. I realize everyone is into linen these days, but I do love good quality cotton sheets, and much prefer cotton over linen.

If you’re new here, the iron bed is one I found here on the property and restored several years ago. The antique Harden Mission settle, which was in the old house, was sold by my grandmother, and a sweet neighbor gifted it back to me for special birthday a few years ago. The trunk was my grandmother’s, and the feedsack quilt belonged to the same family friend who created the needlepoint hanging on the old window. She had been a model in New York in her younger days and had a summer home here in the mountains. My daddy used to bring groceries to her when he was a kid from my grandfather’s store, and she loved him so much she later added an addition onto my parents’ house for her summer residence. My dad would fly to Tampa and drive her back here for the summer then take her back in the fall. She had a fabulous high-rise apartment overlooking Bayshore Boulevard in Tampa and was such a talented lady who did all kinds of crocheting, knitting, needlepoint, etc. This quilt is one of two from her childhood.

Obviously, I love things with a story☺️

I clipped some branches from my grandmother’s weeping cherry tree, and I will change these out for whatever is blooming all throughout the summer. It just seems so appropriate to have them here with so many other things that belonged to her❤️

The Victorian dresser was inherited and is missing it’s mirror, but it works quite well with this antique mirror from the same relative.

The oil pastel is by Louis Rowell dated 1911 and is the view from my great grandmother’s porch. It’s a special piece of art that I treasure. I restored my grandparents’ medicine cabinet last winter and included everything they originally had in it.

My maternal grandmother crocheted the beautiful white runner, and I love having it here with things from other family members.

White lace curtains really keep the room light and cool for summer.

This room actually went a very different direction than I had originally planned, but I loved how it turned out and am enjoying being surrounded by things I love☺️

It really is possible to create a beautiful space by using things you already have. I love to move things around, try different combinations, and rotate my family treasures. I also think fabric is such an easy way to change a room – different curtains, pillows and linens really changed the look and feel of this room.

Most importantly, though, this is a space we look forward to resting after long and stressful days. And we’re more than thankful to have it.

Be sure to check my youtube video with a behind the scenes look at how I put this room together.

I agree on cotton sheets and chenille, perfect weight for summer. Rest and sleep are sooo important to our health. Loved your quilt , I need to get mine out and enjoy, the bowl and pitcher, I have my grandmothers big ironstone bowl and pitcher, also need to get that out! Loved your use of flowering branches reflected in the mirror. Please do a post of JUST the medicine cabinet, lots of history and fun there. Thank You for sharing your love for your family! As usual, Beautiful Job!

Thank you! I love lace curtains, especially for spring and summer. I used to be able to buy them at stores like Ames, Walmart, Kmart, but they must have gone out of style because the only place I can find them now is online – amazon, etc.

What makes this room so special is that so many items hold a family story. I particularly love the quilt and the medicine cabinet (and that you kept all the original items from it). thank you for sharing it.

The room is beautiful–full of lovely heirlooms. However, why did you paint it that dark, rather sad color? Even a lighter shade in the same color range would raise the cheerfulness level! But I’m so glad you got rid of the white on the mantelpiece and woodwork! This is much better.

Because I love the color, as I explained, and I decorate for myself, and my family who live here, not anyone else’s preferences. It’s not remotely sad, and it makes all the beautiful things stand out – especially with the white. It’s also super cozy. I’m very thoughtful about what I do, and I loved the mantel when the room was white, but it didn’t work with the dark room, so it works much better in the room this way. It was beautiful white as well.
